Our NRA Basic Firearm Training Courses provide the foundational knowledge, skills, and safety principles necessary to pursue your shooting interests with confidence.
Since 1871, the NRA has been dedicated to providing basic training in the safe and proper use of firearms. This tradition of public service continues today, with NRA Certified Instructors offering comprehensive training across the United States.

Basic Pistol Course
This course includes both classroom instruction and range time, focusing on the fundamentals of shooting revolvers and semi-automatic pistols. Students will learn:

NRA’s rules for safe gun handling

Pistol parts and operation
-
Ammunition knowledge
-
Shooting fundamentals
-
Range rules
-
Shooting from the bench rest position and two-handed standing positions

Cleaning the pistol
-
Continued opportunities for skill development

Each student will receive:

NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure

Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet

Basics of Pistol Shooting Student Examination

Course Details

Duration: 1 day / 8 hours (7 hours in the classroom, 1 hour at the range)

Important Notes
-
Attire: Please wear long pants with pockets, closed-toe shoes (no flip-flops or sandals), and a crew neck or button-up shirt (no low-cut V-necks). A cap or hat with a brim is recommended. Bring water to stay hydrated during range time.

Equipment: You may bring your own handgun, holster, and mag pouch. Allowed calibers include .380, .38SPL, 9MM, .357SIG, .40S&W, and .45ACP. Revolver shooters should bring a minimum of four speed loaders, moon clips, or speed strips.

Prerequisites
Participants must have completed a Handgun Basic Orientation. This course is designed to build on those foundational skills.
